VE DAY COMMEMORATIONS

Let’s do our bit to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day this Friday 8th May 2020-from our homes!
We will remember them.
Victory in Europe (VE) Day in 1945 marked the formal acceptance of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender by Britain and its Allies following almost six years of WW2. It saw spontaneous celebrations break out across the country, and the Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, ventured out with a group of friends, including her sister Princess Margaret, to experience the excitement in London! The current situation, with Covid-19, means that there will be no street parties, parades or concerts this year, but nonetheless there are plenty of ways to celebrate from the safety of our own homes! We still have a duty to remember the past and pay tribute to the Second World War generation, who gave so much for us. We can honour our heroes both then and now by taking part in VE Day celebrations from the comfort and safety of our homes.
So make sure you join in on Friday 8 May (you can start the preparations earlier) as we all pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of the entire Second World War generation. We’ve pulled together some resources from various sites below for you to take a look at and get involved in-there is also a “20 Ways to Pay Tribute #stayathome from Oaky” too!
As always, remember to tweet us @Oakwood_Avenue or send an email to your year group twitter account so we can all celebrate together (virtually!) as an Oaky Family.

cHRIS BENT
Chris Bent, a member of our Oaky Family and local historian, has inspired and supported our learning about WW1 and WW2. More information can be found under "About Us" and "Our School History" tabs. This is just one of Chris's most recent films, click here, ready in time for the 75th anniversary.
Listen to our hero John Bent (Chris's Dad) talking about his time in a Prisoner of War camp in Germany. His VE Day back in May 1945 was a bit different to the parties that were being held back home! Click here to see the video.
Let's remind ourselves of another one of Oakwood's Fallen-Robert Hutchinson. To read the article, just click here.
