Can you believe that your child is nearing the end of the Oakwood journey? We want them to have a fantastic year with us in Year 6 and leave in July, not only with wonderful memories, but feeling proud knowing that they have achieved their true potential. We want to prepare them for becoming independent, confident and eager learners ready for their high school years .
Your support in this is crucial and the Year 6 team want to work in partnership with you as parents to help your child reach their very best.
Please keep up to date with our learning journey through the year by following us on Twitter Y6twitter@oakwoodavenue.co.uk
Please ensure your child brings these things to school daily :
A water bottle and book bag - or because your child is older, it will mist likely be a bag of their choice! The important thing is that they are responsible for bringing in their reading book, reading records and any spelling books they may need on a daily basis.
PE days
Your child can come to school in their school PE kit (black tracksuit bottoms /leggings/school shorts, Oaky t-shirt, Oaky hoodie and pumps/trainers) on PE days
All of Y6 will have PE on Tuesday
On forest school days your child can come to school in suitable forest school clothes. Your child’s teacher will let you know the dates for this via a letter or School Ping
Snack
Parents can provide a healthy snack from home. At present there is no snack available from the school kitchen. This could be subject to change.

Homework
Reading
Your child will be given a reading book suited to their level of reading within the first couple of weeks back as well as a reading record. We ask that all reading records be placed in a basket outside your child’s classroom every Monday morning so that the teachers can check their home reading. We encourage the children to try to read every night, however we also realise that family life is busy so ask that they read at least 3 times per week and make a comment each time. One of these comments must be written or signed by an adult. Reading books and records need to be brought in daily as the children do a lot of 1:1 and group reading with adults.
Spelling
Spelling lists will be handed out each Monday, they relate to the word level work that has taken place in your child’s English class and need to be learnt over the week.
Maths
This is times tables practise which can be writing them out and playing games but must include TT Rockstars x3 a week. Other tasks may be sent home sometimes too, these may be paper based or online.
Home Learning Projects
There will only be one piece of Topic homework per term i.e. 3 in the year. Each term Oaky will ask the children to complete a project linked to their topic learning. Letters will be sent out informing you of this and the children will have a few weeks to complete the task. There will always be a choice to make learning as personalised as possible for your child.

The Oaky Way – Staying Connected
As you will know from the Parent Handbook, although we are having to limit physical contact during drop off and pick up times. At drop off, teachers will be waiting for your child with a smile, but please do not be offended by the rules in place, as teachers won’t be able to have a discussion about your child on the playground. You will still have the channels to be able to communicate with us. Please continue to use the Senior Leadership and year group emails to communicate non-urgent messages, for example, up and coming appointments your child may have.
If you require a more lengthy conversation, then please email or ring for an appointment with the class teacher.
For safeguarding and welfare concerns, please continue to use Option 4 on the school phone line and ask to speak to Mrs Frank
As you will have seen from the first few days of term, members of the senior leadership team will be visible at drop off and pick up times. The senior leadership team are still available with an open door policy, albeit a different way of virtually communicating and keeping socially distant.
We can still smile, laugh and show warmth at a distance!
